Sstep Drop Foot Sock
This video explains how to properly wear and care for the S step drop foot sock. Always refer to your medical provider for additional instructions.
How to Use the Sstep Drop Foot Sock
The Sstep Drop Foot Sock is designed to provide support for individuals with drop foot and uses an adjustable cable system to help achieve the appropriate tension. Properly putting on, adjusting, and removing the sock can help provide comfortable support while reducing wrinkles and areas of unwanted pressure.
Follow the instructional video on this page along with the PDF wear and care instructions provided by Comprehensive Prosthetics and Orthotics. Always follow any additional or individualized instructions from your medical provider.
How to Put On and Attach the Sstep Drop Foot Sock
- Open the Velcro tabs at the top of the sock to make the opening as wide as possible.
- Check that the number 1 markings near the toes are facing upward.
- With your palm facing up, place your hand inside the sock and reach down to the toe area.
- Grab the toe section from inside and pull it inside out until the heel seam becomes visible.
- Remove your hand and pull the foot portion of the sock over your toes and midfoot.
- Smooth the sock carefully so there are no wrinkles or material bunched around the toes.
- Pull the entire sock upward along your leg until the adjustment dial rests on the front of your shin, just below your knee.
- Secure the two upper straps so they fit snugly.
- Keep your foot on the ground and move your knee forward until it is positioned over your toes.
- Turn the dial clockwise
The sock should feel supportive without creating excessive pressure or discomfort. Follow the tension recommendations provided by your medical provider rather than overtightening the device.
How to Loosen and Remove the Sstep Drop Foot Sock
- Keep your foot in a stable position before beginning removal.
- Turn the adjustment dial counterclockwise slightly to loosen the cable system. You do not need to turn the dial very far.
- Move your ankle in a swirling motion after turning the dial to help the cables loosen.
- Open the two Velcro straps at the top of the sock.
- Gently pull the sock downward over your lower leg.
- Continue removing the sock from your heel, midfoot, and toes without forcing or excessively stretching the material.
- After removing the sock, inspect your skin for areas of redness, irritation, or excessive pressure.
Check Your Skin When Using the Sstep Drop Foot Sock
Check your skin every day while using your Sstep Drop Foot Sock. Some temporary redness can occur from pressure, but redness that remains for more than 15 minutes after removing the sock may indicate excessive pressure in that area.
If redness lasts longer than 15 minutes, stop wearing the sock, take a picture of the affected area, and contact Comprehensive Prosthetics and Orthotics for further guidance. Do not continue wearing the device until you have received appropriate instructions.
Cleaning and Caring for Your Sstep Drop Foot Sock
When the sock becomes dirty, it can be spot cleaned using soap and warm water. It can also be cleaned in a washing machine. Comprehensive Prosthetics and Orthotics recommends placing the sock in a garment bag when machine washing and avoiding both fabric softener and bleach.
Allow the Sstep Drop Foot Sock to air dry completely before putting it back on. Do not wear the device while it is still damp.
Breaking In Your Sstep Drop Foot Sock
A gradual break-in period gives your body time to adjust to the way the Sstep Drop Foot Sock affects your walking. Unless your medical provider gives you different instructions, Comprehensive Prosthetics and Orthotics recommends beginning with two hours of wear on the first day and adding two hours each day until you reach full-time wear.
- Day 1: 2 hours
- Day 2: 4 hours
- Day 3: 6 hours
- Day 4: 8 hours
- Day 5: Full-time wear
