Conditions Treated with Spinal Orthotics:

  • Vertebral compression fractures
  • Degenerative disc disease
  • Spinal trauma and injury
  • Post-operative spinal fusion
  • Osteoporosis-related spinal instability
  • Kyphotic deformities and spinal curvature

Types of Spinal Brace Orthotics

Spinal orthotics, or spinal braces, are medical devices that stabilize the spine, limit movement, and relieve pressure on affected vertebrae. They are prescribed for conditions such as vertebral fractures, scoliosis, post-surgical recovery, and degenerative spinal disorders. At CPO, we offer the following types of spinal orthoses:

Cervical Orthoses (CO)

Designed to support the neck and upper spine, cervical orthoses are often used after whiplash, cervical spine surgery, or injury. Depending on the patient's needs, soft and rigid collars are available.

Thoracolumbosacral Orthosis (TLSO)

TLSOs support the thoracic, lumbar, and sacral regions of the spine. Commonly used post-surgically or following compression fractures, these braces are custom-molded for maximum stability and control.

Lumbosacral Orthosis (LSO)

LSOs provide support to the lower back and pelvis. They are ideal for managing lower lumbar pain, disc degeneration, or post-operative lumbar fusion recovery.

Hyperextension Orthoses (Jewett & CASH Braces)

Hyperextension orthoses, such as the Jewett and CASH (Cruciform Anterior Spinal Hyperextension) braces, are specialized spinal braces used to treat compression fractures and stabilize the upper spine following trauma or surgery. These braces limit the spine's forward bending (flexion), reducing pressure on the anterior vertebrae.

Jewett Brace

The Jewett brace features a three-point pressure system, with pads at the sternum, pubic bone, and back, to prevent flexion while allowing limited lateral and extension movement. It is lightweight, adjustable, and commonly used to treat thoracic compression fractures or osteoporosis-related spinal injuries. Key benefits of the Jewett Brace include:

  • Restricts spinal flexion to aid healing
  • Promotes upright posture during recovery
  • Used post-fracture, kyphoplasty, or surgery
  • Typically worn for 6–12 weeks or as prescribed

CASH Brace

The CASH brace uses a cruciform (cross-shaped) aluminum frame to limit spine flexion with anterior and posterior pressure. It offers a more minimal profile and is often preferred for mild to moderate thoracic spine stabilization. Key benefits of the CASH brace include:

  • Low-profile, lightweight design
  • Ideal for conservative treatment of thoracic injuries
  • Adjustable fit for comfort across body types
  • Appropriate for both short-term and ongoing stabilization
