Below Knee Prosthetic Liner
This video explains how to properly wear and care for a below knee ( BK or TT ) prosthetic liner. Always refer to your medical provider for additional instructions.
How to Use a Below-Knee Prosthetic Liner
A below-knee prosthetic liner creates a protective layer between your residual limb and prosthetic socket. Wearing the liner correctly can help support a secure fit, improve comfort, and reduce the risk of wrinkles or pressure points.
Follow the instructional video on this page along with the wear and care instructions provided by Comprehensive Prosthetics and Orthotics. Always follow any additional directions from your prosthetist or medical provider.
How to Put On and Attach a Below-Knee Prosthetic Liner
- Turn the liner completely inside out so the gel side faces outward.
- Position the end of the liner directly against the end of your residual limb.
- Make sure there are no air pockets trapped between the liner and your skin.
- If your liner has a pin at the end, make sure the pin is centered and points straight away from the end of your limb rather than sitting at an angle.
- Begin rolling the liner upward over your residual limb.
- Continue rolling until the gel side rests against your skin and the fabric or material side faces outward.
- Smooth the liner as you go to help prevent wrinkles.
- Do not pull the liner up your leg. Rolling it into place helps reduce the chance of folds or wrinkles that could cause pressure or discomfort.
How to Remove and Detach a Below-Knee Prosthetic Liner
- Begin at the top of the liner.
- Roll the liner downward over your residual limb rather than pulling it off.
- Continue rolling until the liner is completely removed.
- You may notice perspiration collected inside the liner after wear. This is normal.
- After removing the liner, inspect your skin for irritation, redness, or other changes.
How to Clean a Prosthetic Liner
Your prosthetic liner should be washed after every wear to help maintain proper hygiene and protect the liner material.
- Turn the liner completely inside out so the gel side faces outward.
- Wash the gel side using warm water and soap.
- Use your hand or a soft washcloth when cleaning.
- Do not use abrasive scrubbing tools, as these may damage the gel material.
- Once a week, wipe the liner with rubbing alcohol.
- Rinse the liner thoroughly with warm water after using rubbing alcohol.
- Turn the liner back so the material side faces outward.
- Place it on a drying stand if one is available, or lay it flat to air dry.
- Make sure the liner is completely dry before wearing it again.
Check Your Skin and Liner Every Day
Inspect your residual limb every day for areas of redness, irritation, or discomfort. A mirror can help you see the end of your limb or other areas that may be difficult to inspect directly.
If you notice an irritated area, check the matching area of the liner for signs of damage. Look for breakdown of the gel material, rips, tears, or other deterioration that could affect comfort or fit.
If you find damaged liner material or develop an irritated area on your residual limb, contact Comprehensive Prosthetics and Orthotics. Your care team can evaluate the issue and help determine whether a replacement liner or other adjustment is needed.
