Pediatric Abduction Orthosis are essential devices used to manage the hip's range of motion and provide comfort for pediatric patients. These orthoses are particularly beneficial for children who have undergone hip surgeries or suffer from conditions like Legg-Calve-Perthes Disease, congenital hip dislocation, and other hip abnormalities. Comprehensive Prosthetics and Orthotics is a premier provider of these orthoses, delivering individualized results for each patient to ensure optimal outcomes.
Pediatric Abduction Orthosis Treatment Options
Pediatric Abduction Orthosis is designed to control the hip's range of motion by presetting a specific abduction angle. This helps achieve maximum control during walking and post-operative recovery. These orthoses are crafted to be comfortable and effective in managing various hip conditions, ensuring that children receive the best care.
Illfeld Pediatric Hip Abduction Splint
The Illfeld Pediatric Hip Abduction Splint is used to control hip abductor spasms. It consists of two aluminum thigh bands fastened to a stainless steel crossbar with swivel joints, covered with fabric, or dipped in plastisol. This splint is adjustable and is primarily indicated for congenital hip dislocation, hip dysplasia, and dislocations due to cerebral palsy and other neuromuscular conditions.
A Frame Orthoses
A Frame Orthoses correct rotational and angular malformations by applying corrective forces for more proximal issues. These orthoses feature calf and thigh bands and pressure pads attached to an “A”-shaped metal frame, adjustable to accommodate children of various sizes. They are indicated for femoral torsion, angular deformities, and rotational deformities.
HKAFO (Hip Knee Ankle Foot Orthosis)
The HKAFO extends a KAFO with hip joint and pelvic devices, providing extra stability for patients with hip paralysis and weakness. It stabilizes and aligns the lower leg, reducing undesired motion and increasing efficiency. Indications include hip instability, spina bifida, recurrent hip dislocation, and high neurological impairment.
Anti-Adduction Hip Arthosis
The Anti-Adduction Hip Arthrosis prevents leg scissoring, using co-polymer cuffs and condylar wedges with Velcro. It is indicated for low-grade cerebral palsy, overactive hip adductors, and muscle imbalances due to upper motor neuron lesions.
Pavlik Harness
The Pavlik Harness is designed for infants who have not yet started walking. It consists of straps across the shoulders and chest and stirrups for the feet. It maintains hips within flexion and abduction limitations, allowing safe movement and preventing congenital hip dislocation without casting.
Sure Step De-Rotation
The Sure Step De-Rotation Orthotic provides dynamic stability for mild femoral and tibial torsion. It can be attached to existing footwear and hidden under clothes, ideal for children with non-fixed rotational deformities.
Abduction Bars
Abduction Bars are used post-surgically to maintain hips in an optimal position during restricted ambulation. Made from lightweight, breathable neoprene, they are indicated for conditions like Legg-Calve-Perthes Disease and post-surgical hip recovery.
SWASH
SWASH stands for "Standing, Walking And Sitting Hip" orthotic. It provides control of hip abduction throughout dynamic sitting and standing, reducing scissor gait and internal rotation. It is indicated for cerebral palsy and children with lateral femoral head migration.
RGO (Reciprocating Gait Orthosis)
The RGO is used for children with neurological impairments in the lower extremities. It enables stability during walking and functions as a standard. It translates hip extension on one side into hip flexion on the opposite side, ideal for children with L1-L3 lesions with preserved iliopsoas and hip adduction.
Frejka Splint
The Frejka Splint keeps the legs outwardly rotated to ensure proper hip alignment, which is particularly useful for infants with congenital hip dislocation. It is typically worn for 1-2 months to facilitate appropriate hip positioning and development.
