Pediatric Hand Prosthetic Treatment Options

Passive Hand Prosthesis

Passive hands are ideal for infants up to 18 months old and are often chosen for their appearance. These prosthetics are designed to closely resemble the natural hand while providing basic functional capabilities such as pushing and balancing. Options include the Steeper foam-filled infant hand, the Centri infant hand, and the Dorrance 12 P hook, which can hold objects. Passive hands are lightweight and do not have any electronic or mechanical moving parts, making them comfortable and easy for infants to use as they begin exploring the world around them.

Active Hand Prosthesis

Pediatric active hand prostheses are designed to enable young users, starting at age 2, to grasp and manipulate objects, significantly enhancing their functional capabilities. These prosthetics can be body-powered, harnessing the movement of body muscles, or externally powered, using small batteries and motors to drive their movements. Active prostheses allow children to control the strength and precision of their grip by detecting muscle signals in the residual limb. This advanced technology supports greater independence and participation in daily activities, empowering children to explore and engage with their environment confidently.

Hybrid Hand Prosthesis

Hybrid prostheses combine elements of two or more prosthetic options to improve functional ability. These prosthetics can include passive, body-powered, and externally powered components tailored to meet the child's needs. By integrating different technologies, hybrid prostheses offer a versatile and comprehensive solution, enhancing the child's overall functional capability and quality of life.
