How to Use an Above-Knee Prosthetic Liner
An above-knee prosthetic liner creates a protective interface between your residual limb and prosthetic socket. Proper application helps improve comfort, reduce skin irritation, and support a secure prosthetic fit. For best results, follow the instructional video on this page along with the PDF wear and care instructions provided by Comprehensive Prosthetics and Orthotics. Your liner may be cut on an angle, with the shorter side positioned along the inside of your leg and the longer side positioned along the outside.
How to Put On an Above-Knee Prosthetic Liner
- Turn the prosthetic liner completely inside out so the gel side faces outward.
- Position the end of the liner against the end of your residual limb.
- Make sure there are no air pockets between the liner and your skin.
- If your liner has a pin or strap at the end, center it carefully. The pin should point straight away from the end of your limb rather than sitting at an angle.
- Roll the liner upward over your limb so the gel side rests against your skin and the fabric side faces outward.
- Do not pull the liner up your leg. Rolling it into place helps prevent wrinkles that can cause pressure or discomfort.
- If the liner is angled, confirm that the shorter side rests against the inside of your leg and the longer side against the outside.
How to Remove an Above-Knee Prosthetic Liner
- Begin at the top of the liner.
- Roll the liner downward rather than pulling it off.
- Continue rolling until the liner is completely removed from your residual limb.
- Some perspiration may collect inside the liner during wear; this is normal.
- After removing the liner, inspect your skin for redness, irritation, or other changes.
How to Clean and Care for a Prosthetic Liner
Your above-knee prosthetic liner should be washed after every wear. Turn the liner completely inside out so the gel side faces outward, then wash it with warm water and soap using your hand or a soft washcloth. Avoid abrasive scrubbing tools that could damage the gel material. Once a week, wipe the liner with rubbing alcohol and then rinse it thoroughly with warm water.
After cleaning, turn the liner back so the fabric side faces outward and allow it to dry completely. Place it on a drying stand if available, or lay it flat to air dry. Do not put the liner back on until it is fully dry.
Check Your Skin and Prosthetic Liner Daily
Inspect your residual limb every day, using a mirror if needed, to check areas that are difficult to see. If you notice irritation, examine the corresponding area of the liner for gel breakdown, rips, or tears.
