Spina Bifida

Spina bifida is a developmental congenital disorder wherein the embryonic neural tube is incompletely closed. The vertebrae outside the spinal cord are not fully formed and remain un-fused and open. This causes a portion of the spinal cord to jut out through the opening in the bones. Sometimes, a fluid-filled sac surrounds the spinal cord. Other defects include anencephaly, a condition wherein a portion of the neural tube that is the cerebrum does not close, and encephalocele, wherein other parts of the brain remain un-fused.

There are three types of spina bifida: spina bifida occulta, spina bifida cystica with meningocele, and spina bifida cystica with myelomeningocele. The most common location is the lumbar and sacral areas. Myelomeningocele is the most common form, and this leads to disability in most individuals. Risks of getting spina bifida can be decreased by up to 70% when the mother takes daily folic acid supplements during the pregnancy.
