Congenital Scoliosis
-
During fetal development, the spine forms as a single column before dividing into individual segments, eventually becoming the spine's bones. However, if the division of one of these segments is incomplete, it can lead to a condition known as congenital scoliosis. In this condition, two vertebrae are joined together (hemivertebra), causing a halt in growth on that side of the spine and resulting in an abnormal curvature. At Comprehensive Prosthetics and Orthotics, we understand the complexity of congenital scoliosis and the importance of tailored treatment plans.
Our experienced specialists work closely with orthopedic surgeons to provide personalized solutions, ensuring optimal outcomes for each patient. Whether it's bracing, casting, or other interventions, we strive to support patients throughout their journey toward improved spinal health. Congenital Scoliosis Orthotic Treatment
Bracing plays a crucial role in managing congenital scoliosis. Each brace is customized for the individual patient, with multiple pads incorporated to enhance comfort. Except during bathing, the brace should be worn constantly, and an orthotics specialist should closely monitor the curve's progression. In some cases, bracing effectively controls the curvature, eliminating the need for further treatment after prolonged use.
Bracing
In cases where the curvature falls between 25-50 degrees on an X-ray and the patient has remaining growth potential, a Thoracic Lumbar Sacral Orthosis (TLSO) may be prescribed. This brace applies targeted pressure to specific back areas to straighten the spine while worn. While the curvature may reduce inside the brace, it typically returns to its original degree once removed.
