About Pediatric Orthotics
Pediatric Orthoses are specialised orthoses created for children with deformities, congenital defects and other injuries. CPO uses state of the art technology to help children by fitting them with orthoses that support, relieve pain from and sometimes restricts motion of parts of the body. CPO makes sure that children get the best care and we also have the resources to help see them through their growth, change of movement and patterns.
Pediatric orthoses could last anywhere up to a year to two or three years for kids, keeping in mind their activities and growth patterns. We follow up with you every six months or so and also make sure that your child is adjusting to the orthosis properly.
Types and Features
Cranial-Remolding Helmets A cranial re-molding orthosis, or helmet, is a plastic protective head covering or band that is used to treat plagiocephaly and brachiocephaly, two conditions involving the flattening of the head.
The cranial remolding orthosis (helmet) or band is used to remold the head into a symmetrical shape as the baby grows. It allows the flattened areas to round out and prevents the bulging areas from progressing. The helmet or band does not put pressure on your baby’s head, but guides the growth to specific areas to improve the head shape.
It is very important to start treatment for these conditions early since the growth of the head slows down after the age of one. It is also important for the baby to be screened for other conditions that may have caused the uneven head growth.
Reciprocal Gait Orthosis (RGO) If your child has been diagnosed with muscular imbalance and/or weakness, paralysis (spinal cord injury, spina bifida, myelomeningocele), he or she would need a reciprocal gait orthosis.RGO provides support to the hip, knees and ankles so that you child can stand properly. . It provides balance and also allows for dynamic hip stretching. Our CPO orthotists can evaluate your child’s condition and provide you with concise options. Pediatric RGO comes with growth extensions so that your child can still benefit from the same orthosis when he or she has grown inches. We also provide customised RGO with different colour and joint styles options. We will make sure your child has the best care possible, so that nothing hinders his/her active life.
Pavlik Harness Your baby needs a pavlik harness when he or she has congenital hip displasia or developmental hip dysplasia. A pavlik harness allows for variable hip flexion and abduction position. Your baby will be able to move without discomfort with the harness. It is available in sizes for 0-9 months of age and is washable. It is also soft so that it does not chafe your baby’s skin or cause skin abrasions. Our CPO experts will take care of your baby right from evaluation to the fitting and even after that to answer your queries and to advice you.
Hip Abduction Orthoses There are two kinds of hip abduction orthoses for children. One is used for babies with congenital hip dysplasia or developmental hip dysplasia and it is made for 0-18 month old babies. It is made according to prescription; it allows your baby to move his/her hips comfortably. We customise hip abduction orthoses according to the needs of your child.
The other hip abduction orthoses is required for children for post-operative stabilization of the hip secondary to soft tissue release and osteotomies, hip subluxation and dislocation. The brace supports your child’s hip so that he or she can move around and flex the muscles and rotate it too. It comes in different designs and with various joint options. We customise hip abduction orthoses to make sure that your child does not feel uncomfortable wearing it. We take care of the entire process of fitting the orthoses as well as counsel the children when needed.
Knee Ankle Foot Orthosis (KAFO) A KAFO is needed for your child, if he or she suffers from muscular imbalance and/or weakness, paralysis (spinal cord injury, spina bifida, myelomeningocele), cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy or MS (Multiple Sclerosis). It helps support your child’s spine and also helps restrict motion on occasion. According to the condition, our CPO orthotist will help you go through your options like hip joints, knee and ankle joints. We can provide your child with customised knee ankle foot orthosis so that it is comfortable to wear.. It also comes in various designs and colours so that the kids like what they are wearing. Your child will be in good hands when you come to CPO. Our experienced pediatric orthotists take care of the children from the beginning to the end. We encourage frequent follow ups and help you anyway we can.
Denis Browne Splint A Denis Browne Bar or splint is used for correctional methods when your child has conditions like club foot/feet, tibial torsion or other congenital deformities in the leg. The Denis Browne splint consists of two shoes connected by a bar. It allows your child to kick their legs independently, and so he or she can crawl and continue with their active lifestyle. You child would not escape from the orthoses because their feet would be firmly fitted in the shoes and because it would not hinder their movement. Our CPO experts provide you with complete information about the orthoses and also help with the correct usage of it. The Denis Browne bar allows your child to sleep comfortably, and because of the high mobility of the orthosis, your child can be as active as possible.
At CPO, you will find the best orthotic care for your child’s conditions. We provide other pediatric orthoses for several other conditions as well, and our priority is always your child’s well being.
